Caring for Newly Planted Trees
How to take proper care of your newly planted treeNewly planted trees should be given some extra care and attention. They are in the process of establishing a strong foundation and root system in their new environment which causes stress and leaves them vulnerable during this time. Extra care can ensure the tree is set up to survive and thrive.
Watering
Water your new tree right after planting it. You want the roots to be moist but not soaking wet. Continue with consistent watering for the trees first few seasons.
Fertilizing
Many lawns in urban areas lack nutrients. Fertilizer can help with this. A slow releasing fertilizer is a good choice because it’s easy to apply and it’s a low maintenance way to provide plenty of nutrients to the tree.
Mulching
Applying a layer of mulch is a wonderful way to give your new tree the right environment for healthy growth. Many types of mulch contain nutrients that will benefit the tree, and it also acts as a layer of insulation to block weeds and retain moisture. When applying mulch, leave a few inches around the base of the tree clear of mulch. Mulch is also visually appealing.
Pruning
Newly planted trees should be pruned to help them grow into an ideal structure. It’s important for a new tree to be structurally sound and pruning helps with this. However, don’t do the pruning immediately after planting. When the tree is first planted it should just be trimmed, and some dying or weak branches can be pruned off. Wait a few years until the tree is well established to do any heavy pruning.
After following these steps, be sure to monitor your new tree regularly. If any issues arise, you’ll want to address them as soon as possible. Newly planted trees aren’t strong enough to tolerate some things that mature trees are able to, for example drought.
