Cedar Apple Rust
What is cedar apple rust and what to do if your plants have itWhat is cedar apple rust?
Cedar apple rust is a type of fungus disease that affects apple trees, and other members of the rosaceae family. Cedar apple rust is most common in areas where juniper and apple trees are growing in close proximity.
How to spot it
Cedar apple rust is active mostly during the spring and summer. It causes yellow, orange, or brown spots on leaves, stems, and fruits. You may also spot an orange powder on the affected areas. This fungus can cause significant damage to trees by reducing the trees ability to photosynthesize, and weakening its overall health.
When the cedar apple rust is severe, it can kill the tree, which is why it’s important to take action as soon as you spot the disease.
What to do if you suspect cedar apple rust
- Remove infected spots. Be sure to discard in a plastic bag or destroy the removed pieces to prevent spread.
- Use a fungicide. Choose a fungicide product that is specifically formulated to target cedar apple rust. Follow the instructions provided on the packaging. Wear appropriate protective clothing to apply the fungicide. Take extra care during application to avoid sensitive areas such as waterways, other plants, or areas where pets or children may play.
- Remove juniper trees. Cedar apple rust requires both apple trees and juniper trees to survive, so removing one from the equation will break the life cycle of the fungus.
