How to Care for Soil

Follow these tips for healthy soil

Soil cultivation

Soil cultivation is the removal of weeds and loosening of the soil. This is beneficial because soil often develops a crusty top layer that makes it difficult for sunlight and other nutrients to penetrate through. Cultivation breaks through this top layer and makes the soil loose enough for all that good sunlight, oxygen, and other nutrients to get through. This process makes it much easier for plants to grow. Cultivation only needs to be done a couple inches below the surface. Cultivation should be done when you notice the hard top layer developing on the surface, or when planted new seeds. Be careful not to disrupt plant roots. Avoid cultivation when the soil is wet, as you may accidentally make the soil more compact.

Soil amendment

Soil amendments are any material that can be added to soil that will improve the soils health. Some good soil amendments are organic matter like compost, manure, and peat moss. Amendments can also be used to change the pH level of the soil and improve its texture. Changing these qualities can be beneficial for many types of plants with specific soil requirements.

Soil testing

Testing your soil should be done when you suspect it may not be adequate for the plants you’re growing. Testing your soil will show you it’s pH level, nutrients, texture, and organic matter. Most nurseries and garden stores carry at home soil testing kits. Since all plants have different soil requirements, understanding your soil is the first step in creating an ideal environment to grow your garden.

Soil tilling

Soil tilling is the same as cultivation but deeper. Tilling is usually done to mix amendments into the soil. Tilling should be done down to about 4-10 inches below ground level. Tilling to add amendments is good to do in late fall before things go dormant over the winter season, so that the amendments can decompose over the winter season.

Different varieties of plants, trees, and shrubs all have different soil requirements, which can be difficult to keep track of. Once you know the soil requirements you’re after, use these tips to determine what needs to be done to create the best soil conditions. Our garden cleanups include soil care services.
