How To Save Your Plants From Dying Over The Winter

How To Save Your Plants From Dying Over The Winter

Prepare your plants to survive the winter

Water

During the fall you should continue to water your trees and shrubs to avoid the risk of them drying out in the winter.

Trim

Trim shrubs or trees to minimize the risk of wind or snow damage. Trimming reduces the risk of limbs breaking off over the winter.

Fertilize

Applying some quality fertilizer will promote overall health and will give your trees and shrubs the nutrients they need.

Protect

During the winter your plants are more vulnerable to animals like rabbits and deer, due to a lack of food availability. Protect your plants by staking them up or adding a deer cage.

Warmth

Subtropical plants such as yucca, palm trees and banana trees will benefit from being protected with burlap during temperatures below zero degrees celsius. If your subtropical plants are in pots it is beneficial to bring them inside your home or garage.
