What do to in your garden in March and AprilPost winter garden cleanup checklist
The start of spring is an exciting time for your garden. Flowers are getting ready to blossom, sunlight increases, and trees start producing buds. At this time there can also be a lot of debris and cleanup to be done. Follow our post-winter gardening cleanup checklist to get your garden looking ready for the spring and summer ahead!
Remove fallen debris
Leaves, twigs, and other debris can be blown around your property quite a bit in winter weather in Saanich and Victoria. Cleaning all that up is a good first step to transform your yard back to normal.
Check trees and shrubs
Check on your trees and shrubs for any signs of damage or disease. Remove any affected areas. The weight of snow and strong winds can be damaging to trees and shrubs and can weaken limbs.
Weed garden areas
At this time, you’ll start seeing weeds popping up alongside your flowers. This is a good time to remove those weeds and apply an herbicide to prevent further growth.
Plant new flowers
Late winter/early spring is a great time to plant perennials. Freshen up your garden beds with some nice perennials such as coneflowers, peonies, and geraniums.
Mulch
A fresh layer of mulch has many benefits. It helps nourish your plants, block weeds, retain moisture, and it’s visually appealing.
Fertilize
Spring is a great time to fertilize your lawns, trees and shrubs in Victoria, BC.
