Spider Mites
What are spider mites and how to prevent themWhat are spider mites?
Spider mites are very small spider-like pests, usually measuring about ½-1 mm in length. They infest a wide variety of plants such as fruit trees, veggies, and ornamental plants. Spider mites are most active in the summer months, when they can feed on sap, and they are typically found on the underside of leaves.
What do they do?
The damage that spider mites can do includes defoliating leaves, and preventing plants from being able to photosynthesize. Spider mites reproduce quickly, so if you suspect you have an infestation it’s important to take action immediately.
What to do if you suspect a spider mite infestation
- Remove infested leaves. Dispose the infested leaves in a plastic bag or destroy them to prevent the spider mites from returning.
- Use a chemical pesticide. This may be the best option if the infestation is severe. Choose a pesticide product that is specifically formulated to target spider mites. Follow the instructions provided on the packaging. Wear appropriate protective clothing to apply the pesticide. Take extra care during application to avoid sensitive areas such as waterways, other plants, or areas where pets or children may play.
- Introduce natural predators. Some natural predators to spider mites are ladybugs and green lacewings. Plant flowers nearby to attract ladybugs and green lacewings.
- Change conditions. Spider mites thrive in warm and dry conditions, so regularly watering your plants may discourage the spider mites.
