Tree Trimming or Tree Pruning - What's the difference?
Trimming and pruning are two very different methods of removing branchesPruning vs Trimming
Pruning means removing entire branches or making specific cuts to improve the shape, size or structure of a tree or shrub. Trimming means removing only the outer layer of foliage from a tree or shrub.
Pruning
The goal of pruning is to promote the health and branch structure of the tree or shrub. Pruning involves removing primary or secondary branches. Pruning can also be done to remove diseased or damaged branches. Pruning can also be done to thin out a tree or shrub to allow more light or airflow to pass through its canopy.
How to prune
Pruning should be done with sharp hand pruners, loppers or a hand saw. If the tree is very large, then a chainsaw may be needed. For best results, decide which branches and limbs you want to remove and always start small to avoid overdoing it.
When to prune
The best time to prune your trees and shrubs depends on the variety and should be done according to the plants flowering cycle. Pruning at the incorrect time may result in little or no flowering. If your goal is to remove dead or diseased limbs, then pruning can be done at any time. Many plants that bloom on the previous season’s growth should be pruned right after flowering for best continued regrowth. Other plants that bloom on the current season’s growth should usually be pruned in March or April before the onset of new growth. For best results, consult a professional about the best time your trees and shrubs should be pruned.
Trimming
The goal of trimming is to remove outer foliage and sometimes small branches to shape the tree or bush to a certain design, or to remove overgrown branches. Trimming is generally done for aesthetic purposes and will not necessarily make your tree stronger, however it is healthy.
How to trim
The best tools to use for trimming are trimmers, clippers, or shears. Depending on the size of the tree or shrub you’re trimming, an electric trimmer may provide best results.
When to trim
You can generally trim your trees or shrubs at any time without much risk of damage. Of course, you’ll want to avoid trimming while the plant is flowering, however right after flowering is usually an appropriate time for a trim. Trimming can be done more frequently than pruning. Frequency will vary depending on variety but generally once or twice a year is a good amount.
