What attracts roof rats?

Dense shrubs, hedges, woodpiles, compost piles, and bushes are all very attractive to rats. Hedges or bushes planted right up against your house give the rats the perfect opportunity to easily climb up to your roof area and get nested inside your home. Large trees overhanging your roof are also attractive to these rats and can also give them an opportunity to easily access your roof.

Is there a way to prevent roof rats?

Keep shrubs and trees trimmed at least 5 feet away from your house. Avoid planting shrubs or piling wood along your house. Frequently check any wood or compost around your house for rats. Seal any holes, even tiny ones, along the edges of your house and windows.
